The Smooth Ambler Old Scout is an impressive 10 year single barrel, cask strength straight bourbon whiskey. For those of you who like to be in the know, we’re offering in depth tasting notes of this stellar selection.
Mash Bill: 60% corn, 36% rye, 4% malted barley
Color: Medium to dark amber with copper reflections
Nose: Tobacco and armchair leather with butterscotch
Taste: Sweet-spicy flavors with subtle apple and cherry.
Finish: Long and pleasing mouthfeel. Very voluptuous.
In 2016, a Smooth Ambler Old Scout 10yr release was named ‘World’s Best Single Barrel Bourbon’ in the World Whiskies Award competition in a blind tasting by Whisky Magazine. This barrel is from the same year and source. This bourbon boasts an interesting cask strength example in that, the barrel proof at bottling (94.2proof) is less than barreling proof (120 proof). This is a rare occurrence in this weather climate and happens when the maturation environment is at temperatures where alcohol vapors are released while temperatures do not reach the point when H2O evaporates. This typically happens when stored in non-temperature controlled warehouses on the lowest levels and in the center and is more common in Scotch where average temperatures are much lower than in KY. “This is a great sipping bourbon that is great for the bourbon beginner because it is so approachable”says Chea Beckley, Area Beverage Manager for 21c, “It doesn’t have an aggressive alcohol punch associated with bourbon, yet also has great depth and character wrought in a well matured bourbon.”
How should I drink it? No dilution or rocks necessary. Five to ten minutes rest in the glass will begin to give you a bigger picture of this selections full expression.
